Artwork by Colonel Richardson High School student Summer Smith has been chosen for the annual Caroline County Public Schools holiday card.
Each year, art teachers provide students the opportunity to produce and submit artwork for the school system’s holiday card. Submissions are narrowed down to approximately a dozen finalists and, in keeping with long-standing tradition, the superintendent then chooses the winner.
At the December board of education meeting, Supervisor of Instruction Renee Hesson unveiled Summer’s artwork, and presented her with a certificate. Summer’s family, CRHS art teacher Melanie Bolles, and CRHS Principal Jared Sherman were also in attendance.
Dr. Simmons said that as a person who “cannot draw a stick figure well,” he is continually amazed at the artistic ability of students and what they are learning in art classes. He shared that all the finalists’ artwork was worthy of representing the district; however, Summer’s card really stood out because of the intricate details, in particular noting the footsteps leading from the snowman to the cabin. Board members also commented on details such as the smoke rising from the chimney and the script in the trees.
